bout me
Personality: King is a sweet, affectionate, and handsome boy who enjoys staying close to his people. During walks, he stays so close that he sometimes bumps into the legs of the human walking him. He never gets bored of snuggles and is very treat motivated as well. This will make it fun to work on basic manners and obedience as he wants to please and wants to work for food. While at the shelter, he's been polite and loving but once he's in a home he may get comfortable and show his true huskiness.

History: King came to us as a transfer from the Central Valley.

Dog/Cat Skills: King has met several dogs while on a leash. He has greeted each dog politely with a loose, wagging tail and relaxed body posture. He enjoys daily walks with his canine friends and has demonstrated calm behavior with other dogs. While out walking, he has spotted a cat or two. He has remained calm and given a slight tail wag and is easily jollied away. We do not have any information on how he would do with cats off-leash.

Medical: King arrived with healing fractures of both the right humerus (bone of the upper arm) and the right femur (thigh bone). The healing process was so advanced when he arrived that we were unable to place the bones in normal alignment/position. As a result, the bones are both healing in poor alignment so that the right humerus is shorter than the normal humerus in the opposite front leg and the right femur is shorter than the left. The right femur is also slightly rotated and healing at an abnormal angle so that the right hip and right stifle (knee joint) are not in perfect alignment. The shortened bones may mean that he always has a slight limp in his right legs. As the fractures finish healing, he should have moderate exercise restriction. Leash walks are okay, but off-leash running and playing is not advised. Fracture healing is expected to be complete in approximately 2-4 weeks (by approx. 2/10/21).

In addition to the healing fractures, his dog has mild hip dysplasia in both hips. Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the "ball and socket" joint of the hip does not fit well. Over time, this poor fit can result in arthritic changes in the joint which result in lameness, pain, and decreased ability to exercise. He has no evidence of arthritis on his x-rays at this time and no treatment is recommended for his hips.

Due to these medical conditions, King will do best with moderate activity and won't be a dog who can do extensive physical activity, liking long jogs or hikes. He may need other ways to get out energy like chew or puzzle toys and other forms of mental enrichment.

King is currently being treated for an ear infection caused by a foxtail penetrating the eardrum. His course of treatment includes ear cleanings and the application of ear medication daily for 10 days.
